Kohli's hunger and willingness sets him apart: Dhoni

HIGHLIGHTS

Kohli's glorious run in 2016, especially in T20s has now seen him accumulate 430 runs from 10 innings.

Dhoni believes the key is to keep on scoring runs as long as one is able to do it.

Pakistan skipper Shahid Afridi too didn't shy away from lauding Kohli's effort.

KOLKATA: When MS Dhoni walked into the media conference room, he had a sigh of relief on his face. India needed to win against Pakistan to stay alive in the tournament and Virat Kohli ensured exactly that. His special innings, while chasing 119 runs on a surface not easy for batting, gave India the win, and with it

Generally with other teams, it's either the captain or the Man of the Match, who is supposed to hold the post-match press conference, but with the Indian team, norm is that the Player of the Match never addresses the media. Kohli's brilliant innings under pressure was what the media contingent wanted to know more about from the man itself. So when Dhoni arrived, those ambitions slightly died. But when the Indian skipper readily spoke of what drives Kohli that he produces such gems while chasing, the entire room remained hooked.

"I think it's the hunger to perform; the willingness to take up the challenge. Different people look at the same thing in different ways. His biggest plus point is that he is always ready for a challenge," Dhoni spoke of Kohli. "He wants to improve; wants to contribute in each and every game and that's what it's all about. He now understands how he's supposed to bat on different wickets and get runs. We all know once he gets a start, he always converts in into a big score and I believe that is something important for any youngster who's watching."

Kohli's glorious run in 2016, especially in T20s has now seen him accumulate 430 runs from 10 innings, one of the best by an Indian batsman in recent memory. And Dhoni believes the key is to keep on scoring runs as long as one is able to do it. "Someday, everyone has to undergo a bad patch and what you have to do is minimise that duration. So the best way to go about it is to make the most of the purple patch and score as many runs as possible," Dhoni said.

India vs Pakistan: Banter, Brawls and Monkey Tricks

What’s an Indo-Pakistan cricket match if passions don’t boil over? With the subcontinental rivals squaring up in the Super-10, Group 2 of the ICC World T20 tomorrow, we look at incidents when players stepped over the line of proper conduct and let off a lot of steam. These five incidents are the memorable ones.
Javed Miandad mimics Kiran More
India vs Pakistan: Banter, Brawls and Monkey Tricks
It was the 1992 World Cup in Australia, a match memorable for Javed Miandad’s lec-dem on the behavioural traits of monkeys. To those watching the match on the telly, it came entirely out of the blue and gave us an unerasable memory.
Chasing a target of 217 at the SCG, Pakistan were struggling 85-2 at the end of 25. Miandad, already an eminence grise of the game, was finding it difficult to accelerate against a disciplined Indian bowling attack. And behind the stumps, the diminutive More was keeping up an endless running commentary. Flustered, the Pakistani batsman complained to the umpire about More’s surging hormones. A vociferous but vain appeal for run out triggers the mickey in Miandad, and what followed is pure hilarity.
Venkatesh Prasad gets even with Aamir Sohail
India vs Pakistan: Banter, Brawls and Monkey Tricks
Another India-Pakistan match at the World Cup and another tense moment when fortunes swing decisively. The venue is Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore. The occasion: quarter-final of the 1996 World Cup. India set Pakistan a stiff target of 288 but Pakistan are off and away, with openers Saeed Anwar and Amir Sohail putting up 84 runs in the first 10. Anwar falls, but Sohail is still fire and brimstone. He brings up his 50 with a brutal slash off Venkatesh Prasad and in the heat of the moment, he strides up to the bowler and points to the extra-cover boundary. That’s the destination for your next ball, he says. Prasad is riled but just manages to keep his cool. True to style, Sohail repeats the same shot to the next ball, only to see his off-stump going for a cartwheel. The gentle Prasad is a man transformed as he shows Sohail the way to the dressing room. The roar at the Chhinnaswamy could have been heard in Karachi.
Gambhir runs into Afridi
India vs Pakistan: Banter, Brawls and Monkey Tricks
This is an ODI at Green Park, Kanpur. Gautam Gambhir tickles an Afridi towards short third man for a quick single and collides with Afridi on the latter’s follow through. A ballistic verbal duel ensues and the Pakistan all-rounder is accused of deliberately blocking the batsman’s way. After the match, Gambhir is docked 50 per cent of his match fee for inappropriate physical contact and 15 per cent on the disrepute count. If it really matters, Afridi was fined 75 and 20 per cent for the same offence.
Gambhir goes forehead to forehead with Kamran Akmal
India vs Pakistan: Banter, Brawls and Monkey Tricks
This is the Asia Cup 2010 in Sri Lanka. India are chasing 268, and cruising along nicely. Then Kamran Akmal does a bit of needling from behind the stumps and the volatile Gambhir is all guns and swords. Just before the drinks break, Akmal unsuccessfully appeals for caught behind. Now, during the break, Akmal initiates a discussion and Gambhir is livid. Both players walked aggressively towards each other and are suddenly locked in a eyeball-to-eyeball staring contest. It takes the two umpires and the cool Dhoni to bring the proceedings to peace again.
Ishant Sharma vs Kamran Akmal
India vs Pakistan: Banter, Brawls and Monkey Tricks
It’s Christmas day in 2012, and a India vs Pakistan T20 in Bangalore. Pakistan restrict India to 133 on a green top and are now heading to their first win against the arch-rival in the shortest format of the game. In the 18th over, Ishant claims the well-set Mohammed Hafeez for 61 and is denied the wicket of Shoaib Malik by the umpire. Ishant is clearly aggrieved as Kamran comes to the crease. A verbal brawl is triggered not long after and suddenly Ishant stands at close quarters to engage Kamran. Suresh Raina rushes to calm things down, the other Indian fielders chip in before the umpires intervene. But the banter continues. It ends when Sharma catches Kamran’s heave to long-off boundary and gives the batsman an angry sendoff. Both players cough up hefty fines later.
